The American Institute Of Architects: An Organization Of Members

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has been a respected organization since its founding in 1857. Through its education and outreach programs, the AIA has helped to uphold the professionalism and positive public profile of the architectural industry. An Honorable Awards Program

Some of the more than 90,000 members have been recognized by the AIA for their positive contributions to the industry. Top honorees have earned the AIA Gold Medal and Architectural Firm Award. Other members have been recognized for their excellence in the fields of design, interior architecture and eco-friendly solutions. Denise Scott Brown and Robert Venturi are two notable honorees who have been recognized for inspiring a generation of architects through their scholarly writings and built work.

A Place for Women

The AIA makes a point to recognize the women who help shape the industry every day. The organization has worked to change gender stereotypes and promote better equality within the industry. Clear distinctions are made between interior decorators and the female architects who make up the organization, and the American Institute of Architects strives to encourage more women to become part of the thriving architectural industry.

Memberships

Membership categories include Architect, Associate, International Associate, Emeritus and Allied. Each of these membership types has different qualifications and comes with various benefits. In order to qualify for an Architect membership, a person needs to have received an architecture license from a licensing authority in the United States. The Emeritus membership is designated for anyone who has been with the organization for at least 15 years and is at least 65 years old and unable to continue actively working in the industry.
